Be Counted

Be Counted

118,363 Tachoni were recorded in the 2009 census. 85,597 in 2019. We did not shrink by a third in ten years — we stopped being counted. And a community that is not counted is not funded, not planned for, and not remembered.

In that same census, 3,944,257 people — 58% of all Luhya — recorded themselves only as “Luhya, so stated”, naming no sub-group at all. That is where we went. The next census is in 2029, and the register on this site is what we are building towards.

We are looking for people to hold their ward

This register cannot be built from Webuye alone, and it will not be built by a website. It will be built by people who are already trusted where they live — the ones others already come to. If that is you, say so on the form and we will call.

Two per ward

Ward Coordinator

Holds the register for your ward. Signs people up at church, at market, at funerals and at clan meetings, keeps the ward’s WhatsApp group, and carries your ward’s asks into the Charter. Named on this site.

One per clan

Clan Registrar

The person the Trust asks when something about your clan needs checking — territory, sub-clans, elders, the spelling of a name. You are the authority on your own people; this makes it official.

Open to anyone

Recording elders

Tell us who should be recorded before we lose them, and help us reach the family. You do not need a camera or any training. You need to know who the old people are.

Wherever you live

Tachoni abroad and in the cities

Nairobi, Mombasa, Eldoret, the Gulf, Europe, America. You are Tachoni whether or not you are in Webuye, and the register counts you.

Enter the register

Two minutes. Your details stay with the Trust, are never sold or passed to anyone, and you may remove yourself at any time by replying STOP or writing to us.

We use this to confirm your entry and for news of the archive, the festival and the Charter. It is never sold or passed to anyone.

We ask because being counted is the whole point of this register — in the census, and on the roll. Optional, and it changes nothing about your entry.

Two coordinators per ward, and one registrar per clan. See what the roles involve above.

This goes into the Tachoni Charter, recorded against your ward.
