Where We Are
The Tachoni heartland runs across Webuye East and Webuye West, into Tongaren and Kimilili, and over the county line into Kakamega, Trans Nzoia and Uasin Gishu.
A caution about numbers
Kenya publishes ethnicity only at national level. There is no official count of Tachoni by ward — not in the census, and not from the electoral commission, which does not collect ethnicity at all. Any figure presented as one is somebody’s estimate, however confidently it is quoted.
What can be stated is the gazetted register: how many voters live in the wards our community lives in.
The Webuye wards
| Code | Ward | Constituency | Registered voters |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1104 | Mihuu | Webuye East | 17,438 |
| 1105 | Ndivisi | Webuye East | 17,755 |
| 1106 | Maraka | Webuye East | 13,757 |
| 1107 | Misikhu | Webuye West | 14,118 |
| 1108 | Sitikho | Webuye West | 12,540 |
| 1109 | Matulo | Webuye West | 16,304 |
| 1110 | Bokoli | Webuye West | 15,670 |
| Webuye East and Webuye West combined | 107,582 | ||
For scale: that is larger than Mt. Elgon (76,159), and 16.6% of Bungoma County’s 646,598 registered voters. Chetambe Hills sits in the middle of it, in the Bokoli and Matulo belt.
Beyond Bungoma
Tachoni communities are recorded in Kakamega (Lugari, Likuyani, Matete and Lwandeti), Trans Nzoia around Kitale, and Uasin Gishu around Turbo and Eldoret. No published figures exist for any of them.
There is also a Tachoni diaspora in Nairobi, Mombasa, the Gulf, Europe and North America. The register counts them too.
Why the register will become the better source
As people add their names with their ward, this register will hold the best evidence that exists on where the Tachoni actually live. Not an estimate — a count, assembled by the community itself, and checkable.
